In this video I demonstrate how to export an ePub file from Adobe InDesign CS6.

This is part of the method we use here at Inkslinger to produce our guides. After we finish producing a book in InDesign, we export PDF and ePub files, convert the ePub file into a mobi file, and package all three into a zip file which we offer to our customers in our online store. This gives our customers a wide range of reading choices with a single purchase.

ePub files can be read by a range of e-book readers and software applications. Among the more important readers on this list are the Barnes and Noble Nook, and iOS devices running iBooks. ePub files can also be submitted to the iBookstore for publication.

The steps are fairly straightforward:

  • After selecting a name and location, choose “EPUB” in the Format field, then click Save.
  • Make sure you’re in the General tab in the left column. Unless otherwise specified, we leave all settings at their default configuration.
  • Under Version, choose “EPUB 2.0.1″
  • Define your margins. We use 36 px all around.
  • Switch to the Image tab in the left column.
  • Make sure Preserve Appearance from Layout is checked.
  • We use “96″ in Resolution (ppi), and “Fixed” in Image Size.
  • Make sure you center images under Image Alignment and Spacing.
  • Under JPEG Options in Image Quality select “Maximum”.

The ePub export setting should look something like this.
